I am going home for a week and the trip is going to take me 4 hours to get back. I will be traveling by car and i was wondering how do i safely bring my aquatic turtle along for the ride because I cant find anyone to watch him for a week. Thanks in Advance for everyone's help.
A-Best: First off, I think it would put less stress on your turtle if you fed him a big meal right before you left and then he went a week without eating................it wouldn't cause a turtle to die to go a week without eating(especially if you turned th temp down two or three degrees to decease its metabolism).
If you are inclined to take it with you, a simple cooler works well. Water isn't necessay, but it would probably stress it out less it you put a fairly damp towel(s) in there with it. You will have to make sure your car never gets too cold though.
Coolers are great carriers for reptiles because they retain heat just as well as they retain cold.
A: If you mean fully aquatic then a bucket or poly fish box with some water in it, any temperature drop will be gradual so should be ok.
If you mean semi aquatic then put it in a pillow case inside a cardboard or plastic box with some form of padding above, below and either side. Make sure it's fairly tightly packed but still has good ventilation, you don't want it rattling about but you don't want to suffocate it either
A: By aquatic, is it the type that MUST stay in water?
If so, I'd imagine you can transport it like fish. If you have a cooler, or a bucket with a lid, that can work. It will keep water from spilling, keep him in the dark for less stress, and you can secure the container so it won't tip over during the ride. Coolers will also help to keep his water temperature from fluxuating too much. If you can, put him in the passenger part of the car and not the trunk, because the trunk will get super cold/hot depending on what climate you're in. It will also help if you don't feed him for 12 hours or so before the trip.
A: well i will tell you how i bring my turtles
i get a travel tank if its small you can just get one of these its a plastic tank ..

or if its big you can get the short ones but there longer
and i put iton the floor of t he car and i put towels around it to make sure that the tank doesnt shake alot and push the seat up to it also so it holds it tight and make sure you feed the turtles before you head out and for the tank in the car you just need to put about a 1inch of water and then when you get home you can add more water to them..
thats what i do they will ne fine as long as you dont slam on there breaks
